MUSIC
Bad Cactus Brass Band's latest album, Back For Another Round, showcases clever original lyrics, funky covers of pop songs, and collaborations with vocalists. The band provides a constant party energy of singing, shouting, blasting horns, and danceable grooves, anchored by tuba and a pair of drummers.
From 2009-2015, Bad Cactus Brass Band played over 100 events each year in the Phoenix metro area. They opened for Rebirth Brass Band and Dirty Dozen Brass Band. They even started a Downtown Phoenix Mardi Gras parade and festival. But eventually, their relentless gigging left the band in a rut. In the new album’s title track, bandleader Benjie Messer raps that when “this band retired, at the time, I was sure we couldn’t rise any higher.” Almost ten years later, Back For Another Round proves that wrong. That same verse ends by promising to “blow these horns like our head’s gonna burst and make the sequel better than the first.”
